PRECAUTIONARY SEARCH
Aim: To carry out a safe powered-assisted approach and landing at an unfamiliar field. Application: - To inspect suspect runway prior to landing - To land in an unprepared field when continuation of flight would become hazardous for the following reasons: - poor visibility/low cloud - last light approaching - lost - fuel shortage - pilot/passenger illness - aircraft malfunction Revision:
Wind Determination Field Selection - SIZE – - SHAPE – - SLOPE – - SURFACE – - SURROUNDINGS – - CIVILIZATION –
Air Exercise: - determine wind - select field - adopt precautionary search configuration; 10 flap, 1800RPM, 80kts First Run (500ft) - left circuits (if possible) - align DG to field direction - select reference points on ground as suitable turning points - transmit “PAN” call and Tx to 7700
