It has been said that the revolutionary Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System™ (EVS) is one of the greatest strides forward in aviation safety since the introduction of the instrument landing system in 1929. AN INNOVATION IN INFRARED TECHNOLOGY
The Gulfstream EVS incorporates a specialized advance in infrared imaging technology, inspired by the Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology developed and manufactured by Kollsman. Working together, Gulfstream and Kollsman pushed infrared technology to develop a camera that operates in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectrum. This SWIR sensor is specially tuned to the frequency of runway lights, and is sensitive to the light inherent in the surrounding environment. The nose radome-mounted camera sends a picture to the Honeywell HUD combiner, giving the pilot an accurate and incisive look in low visibility conditions. Even at night, the Gulfstream EVS renders visible runway markings, taxiways, adjacent highways, and the surrounding landscape, drastically reducing the margin for error and for Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), the number one danger in aviation today.
Gulfstream pilots testify to a quantum leap in situational awareness and are decisively confident with the system. Even at such challenging approaches as Aspen at night, the Gulfstream EVS provides the explicit situational information needed for safe flying and landing decisions.
