Pratt & Whitney’s F117-PW-100 engine powers the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport. The F117-PW-100 is a derivative of Pratt & Whitney’s commercial PW2000 engine, rated at 40,440 pounds of thrust. With four engines powering each C-17, this aircraft can carry a payload of 160,600 pounds, take off from a 7,600-foot airfield, and fly 2,400 nautical miles unrefueled. The C-17 aircraft has in-flight refueling capability, and can also land on small austere airfields of 3,000 feet or less. The F117 engine is clearly a solid performer by any measure. In today’s wartime environment, increasing demands on the F117 engine’s performance include severe and unique environmental conditions and extended mission hours. The F117 has consistently proven itself as a world class reliable engine: through Pratt & Whitney’s ongoing investment in product improvements, the engine continuously surpasses established goals of time on wing, in-flight shut downs, and support turnaround time. The world’s ever-changing geopolitical landscape requires military capability. Whether it’s an airlift mission, humanitarian aid, or an overnight combat airdrop in an unsecured location, the F117-powered C-17 is ready to respond. The F117-PW-100 engines are equipped with direct-flow thrust reversers capable of deploying in flight. On the ground, a fully loaded C-17 can back up a two percent grade and turn around on runways only 90 feet wide. The F117-powered C-17 continues to earn confidence from the United States Air Force (USAF) and new international customers as the air lifter of choice. Pratt & Whitney has delivered more than 800 F117 engines that have accumulated more than 4.7 million engine flight hours since initial operating capability was established in1995. During the FY2007 Defense Budget cycle, the Congress passed and President Bush signed a bill that will procure an additional ten C-17 aircraft, bringing the United States Air Force’s (USAF) total order of C-17s to 190. The C-17 has extended its international customer base with the recent acquisition of four aircraft by the Royal Australian Air Force and four aircraft by the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Royal Australian Air Force has received the first two C-17 aircraft and the
