- Status Report The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW200 Turboshaft Engine Family
In 1991, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. (P&WC) certified the PW206A – the first of a new product line of helicopter turboshaft engines. Having incorporated both the key design elements of P&WC legacy engines and helicopter operator input, the PW200 has focused on meeting the varied demands of today’s helicopter operators. The PW200 engine family offers the latest in technological developments, and is backed by a worldwide Customer Support organization. To date, the PW200 turboshaft engine has been selected by five helicopter manufacturers to power their new generation light-twin helicopters. As of the first quarter of 2003, 345 PW200powered helicopters operated in 42 countries around the world, with over 710,000 hours of operating time. For the past years, the PW200 engine has powered roughly 70 per cent of new light-twin deliveries, making it the leader in this market. Key operating segments include the emergency medical services, law enforcement and corporate markets. Current applications include the Agusta A109E Power, Bell M427, Eurocopter EC135 P1/P2 and MDHI MD 900/902, the last three of which will benefit from the latest growth variant of the PW200 family series. Future applications include the Kazan Ansat. In June 2000, Eurocopter selected the growth variant of the PW206B engine for the EC135. The PW206B2 engine combines the PW207 series turbomachine with the angled reduction gearbox of the PW206B engine. Thermodynamically rated at 708 shp continuous oneengine inoperative (OEI) and 816 shp 30 second OEI, the PW206B2 engine enables the EC135 to operate at higher Category “A” take-off weights. The first PW206B2-powered EC135 T2 was delivered to the Swedish Police in August 2001. In parallel, the Bavarian Police retrofitted all of their nine PW206B-powered EC135 helicopters with PW206B2 engines.
