Pratt & Whitney Space Propulsion – Hypersonics
Pratt & Whitney is uniquely positioned to offer a variety of liquid-fueled propulsion system concepts for hypersonic flight. At the heart of these systems is a dual-mode scramjet, allowing the engine to function as a subsonic combustion ramjet at low supersonic speeds (Mach 3-5) and as a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) at high supersonic speeds (greater than Mach 5). Additionally, work is being done on airbreathing combined-cycle engines based on the scramjet, which may contain either rocket or gas turbine engines incorporated in the flowpath for low speed propulsion, and rockets for orbital insertion. Pratt & Whitney and the U.S. Air Force have successfully run a flight-weight hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet Ground Demonstration Engine (GDE-1). Pratt & Whitney is developing propulsion system technologies applicable to hypersonic missiles, manned aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle systems and access-to-space systems. The company has several development programs to further the development of hypersonic propulsion systems. HySET (Hydrocarbon Scramjet Engine Technology) — a three-phase program sponsored by the U.S. Air Force to develop and demonstrate a Mach 4-8 hydrocarbon fueled scramjet propulsion system. Additionally, the program will serve as a stepping-stone to developing a family of hypersonic vehicles, such as air-to-surface missiles, access-tospace systems and global strike/reconnaissance systems.
